These are some scenes from the meeting with the community held in The Green in Marondera Central Business District by the Women Coalition of Zimbabwe recently.
The Chairperson of Marondera WCOZ Miss Jingang Tazovazvino in an interview with Crime Focus, highlighted that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss on matters affecting girls and women in Marondera.
The main speaker was Sergeant Dickson Chitake popularly known as Dex who is Marondera District Public Relations Officer in the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
He outlined the position of the law in matters affecting girls and women saying that women should not hesitate to report matters of Gender Based Violences, Domestic Violence and Sexual harassments. The police assist in apprehending perpetrators and give professional counseling where necessary.
The gathering was implored to report cases of rape within 72 hours to access Post Exposure Prophylaxis from the health department for treatment of possible Sexually Transmitted Infections. Early reporting is essential in making it possible for the police to locate the accused while still at reach and when evidence is still uncontaminated.
Dex discouraged some cultural practices such as Chinamwari saying such practices encourage early child marriages and is sexual abuse on its own as it exposes under age children to sexual activities.
He pointed out that sexual harassment at work places should also be reported to the police's Victim Friendly Unit for investigations and shall present the case to the courts for prosecution.
The perpetrators of all cases which affect girls and women should be brought to book and face the full wrath of law. Eradication of this form of abuse at workplaces encourages women to freely work for their families.
Women were also urged to come up with income generating projects or seek employment when it arises to supplement the salaries of their husbands. The time is over when people used to see only men getting employment and called breadwinners. In this morden world, women carry equal job opportunities as men.
Women were propelled to join hands with the President of the country and participate in the development circles through coming up with projects which support the economic industry.
Dex indicated that women should also render their maximum effort in the fight against drug abuse and desist from drug trafficking and drug dealings. He said that drug abuse is weakening the country's labour force and draining much resources in rehabilitation of the addicts.
Some dignitaries at the event included Constable Jane Zvoushe form ZRP Marondera District Victim Friendly Unity, Lois Gwangwara who is the Councillor of ward 4 Marondera Central Constituency, Patience Chitsaka from Women Affairs Principal Business and Cooperative Development Officer and Cde Faith Chavayaya who is the Ruling Party's Provincial Secretary for Transport.
