Warren Park 1, Harare – once known for its peaceful neighbourhood life and children focused on school and community, is now facing a disturbing reality.
Residents are raising concern over the growing drug and substance abuse among young men, who are increasingly seen wandering around shops, sometimes talking to themselves, and appearing mentally disturbed and disconnected from reality.
“Some of these boys just sit around the shops the whole day. You see them talking to themselves, confused, as if they are hearing voices no one else can hear,” said one concerned resident.
🔴 THE GROWING PROBLEM
Community members report that drugs are becoming more accessible in the area, leading to:
Loss of mental stability among youths
Increased loitering and aimless movement in public spaces
Decline in school attendance and work participation
Rising anxiety among families and residents
Substances such as marijuana, bronco, glue inhalants, and other illegal pills are reportedly being abused.
🟡 COMMUNITY VOICES
“We are afraid for the future of our children. If nothing is done now, Warren Park 1 will become a lost community,” said one worried parent.
🟢 CRIME FOCUS ZIMBABWE: PREVENT • PROTECT • PREVAIL
From a Crime Focus Zimbabwe perspective, this challenge requires urgent collective action.
🔹 PREVENT
Educate young people early about the dangers of drugs
Monitor and reduce illegal substance distribution points
Parents should actively follow up on their children’s movements
🔹 PROTECT
Create safe spaces for youth engagement such as sports and skills programs
Strengthen community support groups
Schools should intensify drug awareness programs
🔹 PREVAIL
Increase access to rehabilitation and counselling services
Strengthen community policing efforts
Support recovery without stigma so that youths can reintegrate into society
Drug abuse does not destroy only one individual—it breaks families, futures, and entire communities.
Warren Park 1 is not a lost place, but it is at a critical crossroads. The decisions made today will shape tomorrow.
We must stop pretending we do not see it. We must act. We must protect our youth. We must protect our communities.
