BULAWAYO — Zimbabwean football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic deaths of three Highlanders Football Club executives who were killed in a fatal road traffic accident.
The deceased have been identified as Highlanders chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice chairman Fiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed the deaths, describing the tragedy as a devastating loss to Highlanders Football Club, the city of Bulawayo and the entire Zimbabwean football fraternity.
The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what was expected to be a historic year for the Bulawayo giants, who are celebrating their centenary. A season that should have been marked by celebration and pride has instead been transformed into a period of grief and mourning.
In a statement, ZIFA said the three administrators served Highlanders with distinction, providing visionary leadership and making invaluable contributions to the growth, development and stability of one of Zimbabwe’s most decorated football institutions.
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi said the football community had lost three dedicated servants whose passion and commitment had left an indelible mark on the game.
“Today, Zimbabwean football has lost three devoted servants whose passion and commitment helped shape one of our nation’s greatest football institutions. We are devastated by this heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Kenneth Mhlophe, Fiso Siziba and Nkani Khoza, as well as the entire Highlanders family,” he said.
The tragedy is a painful reminder of the dangers faced by road users every day. Road traffic accidents can occur suddenly, leaving families, communities and institutions devastated.
