Bulawayo – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Bulawayo Province has intensified efforts to curb the rising cases of motor vehicle theft by engaging car park owners in a stakeholder meeting aimed at strengthening security measures across the city.
The meeting, which was held in Bulawayo, follows a worrying increase in thefts targeting old-shape Honda Fit vehicles in and around the city. It was presided over by the Assistant Commissioner Operations for Bulawayo Province, Didmus M. Sakarombe, who underscored the importance of collective action in combating vehicle-related crime.
During the engagement, police and car park operators discussed practical strategies to enhance the safety of vehicles parked at public and private facilities. Among the key issues deliberated were improving surveillance systems, maintaining accurate records of vehicles entering and leaving car parks, verifying motorists' identities where necessary, and fostering closer cooperation between car park operators and law enforcement agencies.
Assistant Commissioner Sakarombe urged car park owners to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activities or individuals to the police. He emphasized that proactive security measures and timely information sharing are critical in disrupting criminal activities and bringing offenders to justice.
The meeting also highlighted the growing trend of criminals specifically targeting old-model Honda Fit vehicles, prompting the police to describe the incidents as a "siege" that requires coordinated intervention from all stakeholders.
ZRP Bulawayo reiterated that partnerships with businesses, communities and other stakeholders remain essential in preventing motor vehicle theft and enhancing public safety throughout the province.
Police further encouraged motorists to complement these efforts by parking their vehicles only at secure and supervised parking facilities, ensuring vehicles are properly locked, installing additional anti-theft devices where possible, and promptly reporting any suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles.
