What happens when someone walks into a police station or calls the police to report a crime that never happened?

It may be done out of anger, revenge, jealousy, attention-seeking or an attempt to get another person into trouble. But a false crime report is not a harmless prank. When a person deliberately provides false information to law enforcement, they can expose themselves to criminal and other legal consequences.

🚨 WHAT IS FALSE CRIME REPORTING?

False crime reporting occurs when a person knowingly provides false or misleading information to the police or other authorities about an alleged criminal offence.

This can include:

  • Inventing a crime that never happened.

  • Falsely accusing an innocent person.

  • Deliberately exaggerating important facts.

  • Providing fabricated evidence or information.

  • Lying during an investigation with the intention of misleading investigators.

However, it is important to distinguish an honest mistake or genuinely mistaken recollection from a deliberate lie. The key issue is whether the person knowingly and intentionally misled authorities.

⚠️ WHY IS IT SERIOUS?

A false report can trigger a police investigation that consumes valuable time and resources.

Officers may be sent to a scene, witnesses may be interviewed, statements may be recorded and innocent people may face questioning or even arrest.

Meanwhile, genuine victims of crime may be waiting for assistance elsewhere.

False allegations can also cause serious damage to a person's reputation, family relationships, employment and standing in the community.

⚖️ LEGAL CONSEQUENCES

The exact offence and punishment depend on the circumstances and the applicable law.

Depending on what was reported and how the authorities were misled, a person who deliberately makes a false report may face criminal charges and, in appropriate circumstances, other legal consequences.

The situation can become even more serious where a false allegation is deliberately used to cause another person to be arrested, prosecuted or punished.

🔎 THINK BEFORE YOU REPORT

Before making a criminal complaint, make sure that the information you provide is truthful and based on what you genuinely know.

If you are uncertain about something, say that you are uncertain.

Do not manufacture evidence.
Do not coach witnesses to lie.
Do not falsely accuse someone because of a personal dispute.
Do not use the police as a weapon against another person.

🛑 CRIME REPORTING IS A RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting genuine crime is an important part of keeping communities safe. But the reporting system must not be abused.

Tell the truth. Report facts. Allow investigators to investigate.

A false accusation can take an innocent person into the criminal justice system — while taking police officers away from people who genuinely need their help.

CRIME FOCUS REMINDER

Don't use a criminal complaint to settle a personal score.

False reporting can have real consequences.
