HARARE – Eight suspects have been arrested in Marlborough, Harare, following a police operation that uncovered an illegal mining site operating within a residential area.
According to information gathered by Crime Focus Zimbabwe, the suspects are alleged to have been conducting unauthorised mining activities since 2022, raising serious concerns about public safety, environmental damage, and the enforcement of mining laws in urban communities.
The illegal mine was reportedly operating within a built-up residential zone, exposing nearby residents to potential dangers such as:
- Ground collapse and sinkholes,
- Damage to houses and roads,
- Noise and dust pollution,
- Water contamination,
- Increased criminal activity associated with illegal mining operations.
Authorities are understood to have launched investigations into how the operation continued for several years without being detected or stopped, and whether other individuals may have benefited from or facilitated the illegal activities.
