MASVINGO- Notorious armed robber and suspected murderer, Daniel Munyanyi (50) is serving an effective 185 years in prison, arguably the longest prison sentence given since the abolishment of the death sentence.
Munyanyi of Dume Village, Chief Ndanga had an additional 36 years added to his sentence by Masvingo Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura recently.
Munyanyi has been convicted on over 30 counts of armed robbery, attempted murder, unlawful entry, theft and robbery.
He is yet to appear at the High Court facing two murder counts.
Magistrate Bepura convicted Munyanyi on three counts of armed robbery and was sentenced to 12 years in prison on each conviction.
The armed robberies happened between January and February 2026 in and around Mutare.
Circumstances are that Munyanyi and his accomplices who are still at large carried out a series of violent robberies using firearms, knives and other weapons.
The first armed robbery happened on January 15, in Penhalonga. Munyanyi shot Naison Mapanzure and Collen Makombe and stole 27.3 grams of gold, CCTV equipment and US$3500 cash.
On February 18, 2026 at Plot 21 Can Do Farm in Odzi, Munyanyi assaulted Cephas Ndekwere and Collins Mawawadza, and stole a Ford Ranger vehicle, a Samsung S21 Ultra cellphone and cash. The vehicle was later recovered by detectives along Mutare highway.
The third robbery happened on the next day along Grange Road, Mutare. Munyanyi robbed Mupungu Mutatayi and Taremekedzwa Maitsvakeyi at gunpoint. He went away with US$6200, cellphones and a Toyota Fortuner GD6. The vehicle and some of the stolen items were later recovered near Christmas Pass.
Innocent Mudzingwa prosecuted.
