CHIVHU — Tragedy struck on the Chivhu-Gutu Road this past Sunday, April 5, 2026, following a fatal road traffic accident that has left two people dead and four others injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the accident occurred at the 11-kilometre peg along the Chivhu-Gutu Road. According to preliminary police reports, the driver of a Toyota Hilux was traveling towards Chivhu with five passengers on board when the incident took place.
ZRP X handle reads; Authorities stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle under circumstances that remain under investigation. The vehicle veered off the road to the right, subsequently overturning several times before finally coming to a rest back on its wheels.
The impact of the rollover was severe, resulting in the immediate death of two passengers at the scene. The remaining four occupants, including the driver, sustained various injuries and were attended to by emergency services.
Following the crash, the survivors were stabilized and transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
The bodies of the two deceased victims have been conveyed to the Chivhu General Hospital mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.
The ZRP is currently conducting further investigations into the cause of the accident. While details regarding potential factors such as mechanical failure or human error are still being verified, police have reiterated their appeal for motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, particularly during busy travel periods.
Authorities are expected to release more information regarding the identities of the deceased once their next of kin have been notified.
To ensure your safety on the road, especially when traveling, it is essential to be proactive and informed.
Ensure all passengers, including those in the back seat, have their seatbelts fastened. In the event of a rollover—as seen in recent incidents—a seatbelt significantly increases your chances of survival.
Speeding reduces the time a driver has to react to road hazards, wildlife, or sudden vehicle malfunctions. Always drive according to the posted speed limit and road conditions.
Before embarking on a journey, check your tires (including the spare), brakes, lights, and fluid levels. A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to suffer a catastrophic failure at high speeds.
Driving while tired is as dangerous as driving under the influence. If you feel drowsy, pull over at a safe, designated laybye location to rest.
Defensive driving is the practice of anticipating hazards and acting in a way that minimizes the risk of accidents.
Constantly look 15 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This allows you to spot obstacles, debris, or erratic drivers long before you reach them.
Keep a minimum three-second gap between your car and the vehicle in front of you. This ensures you have adequate braking distance in emergencies.
Put the phone away. Distracted driving is a leading cause of loss of control.
Regularly check your mirrors and perform a shoulder check before changing lanes or turning.
If you are involved in or witness an accident, secure the Scene. If possible, move the vehicle to the shoulder to prevent secondary collisions. Use hazard lights and warning triangles.
Assess yourself and others, but avoid moving anyone who appears to have spinal or severe injuries unless there is an immediate threat like fire.
