HARARE — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern directive to the public, urging citizens to prioritize the welfare of road traffic accident victims over the recording of graphic footage.

In a move aimed at curbing the growing trend of bystanders prioritizing social media engagement over human life, authorities are demanding that members of the public shift their focus toward providing essential aid and alerting emergency services immediately upon witnessing a collision.

The ZRP emphasized that the time spent capturing photographs or videos of "horrific accident scenes" is often time stolen from critical, life-saving interventions.

We urge all Zimbabweans to show empathy and responsibility.  When you arrive at an accident scene, your primary focus should be to promptly notify emergency services and, where possible and safe to do so, offer first aid. Filming these scenes and sharing them online is not only insensitive to the victims and their families but can also hinder rescue efforts.

The police have made it clear that this is no longer just a matter of moral concern; it is a legal one. The force has warned that the law will take its course against anyone found capturing or distributing footage of accident scenes.

While the police did not specify the exact charges, they indicated that such actions could be prosecuted under laws relating to public order, the invasion of privacy, or the obstruction of justice, depending on the circumstances of the incident.

The police highlighted a recent, deeply distressing incident involving the family of Ronald Mujuru in Masvingo as a primary example of why this behavior must end. Following the crash, images and videos of the scene circulated widely on social media platforms before the affected families were even properly notified or emergency responders could manage the site effectively.

It has been  noted that the trauma inflicted upon the survivors and the families of the victims by the viral spread of such imagery is immeasurable and counterproductive to the healing process.

We reiterate that the standard protocol for members of the public who encounter a road traffic accident

 Ensure Safety

Move to a safe location to avoid becoming a victim yourself.

 Call for Help

Immediately contact the ZRP or local emergency services with precise location details.

 Provide Assistance

If trained, offer basic first aid while waiting for professionals.

 Preserve Dignity

Respect the privacy of the victims and avoid taking photos or videos of the scene.

As investigations into recent accidents continue, the ZRP maintains that they will be monitoring for any individuals who choose to capitalize on human tragedy for social media clout.

Keep your phone in your pocket. The dignity of the individuals involved should always outweigh the desire to record a tragedy.
