The death toll from the tragic road traffic accident involving a Malawi-bound DRD bus has risen to 17, following the crash which occurred on 05 May 2026 at approximately 1330 hours at the 175 km peg along the Harare–Nyamapanda Road.
A total of 45 injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Kotwa District Hospital and Mutoko District Hospital.
Authorities confirm that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), working in coordination with the Government of Zimbabwe, is engaging with the Government of Malawi through its embassy and relevant agencies to facilitate identification and repatriation of the deceased.
The victims’ bodies have been transferred to mortuaries at Kotwa District Hospital and Mutoko District Hospital, where they await formal identification and post-mortem examinations.
The ZRP has conveyed deep condolences to the bereaved families and extended sympathy to the people of Malawi during this difficult time.
