A 33-year-old Harare driver has been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of culpable homicide following a fatal road traffic accident.
Nyasha Muteweye was convicted by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court after his negligent driving led to the death of a passenger.
The court heard that on 5 February 2026, around midnight, Muteweye was driving a Toyota Hiace along Simon Mazorodze Road towards Waterfalls when he allowed a passenger to dangerously hang onto the rear of the moving vehicle.
Upon reaching Chinzou Roundabout, Muteweye—who was speeding—lost control while negotiating a curve, causing the vehicle to swerve. The passenger fell off and sustained critical injuries.
The victim was rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital, where he was admitted but sadly died five days later.
The court found that Muteweye acted negligently by:
Allowing unsafe passenger behavior
Driving at excessive speed
Failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle
In addition to the prison sentence, Muteweye has been banned from driving Class 2 vehicles for two years, and his driver’s licence has been cancelled.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has reiterated that road safety is a legal duty, warning that reckless conduct on the roads can lead to loss of life, criminal prosecution, and imprisonment.
