A violent four-man robbery syndicate that preyed on vendors and businesspeople across Gwanda has been dismantled, with a regional magistrate handed down a collective 72-year prison sentence this week.
The group, hailing from the Chief Mazetese area in Mberengwa, faced Magistrate Ms. Sithembiso Ndebele following a high-stakes crime spree. The sentencing breakdown is as follows:
Malvin Maranganya (19): 24 years imprisonment.
Fornate Maranganya (26): 24 years imprisonment.
Prince Sibanda (23): 12 years imprisonment.
Tatenda Ndlovu (23): 12 years imprisonment.
Modus Operandi: Deception and Violence
According to CID spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, the gang utilized "wolf in sheep's clothing" tactics to corner their victims between March 29 and April 1, 2026:
The "Hungry Customer" Ruse: On March 29, the quartet posed as customers at a food stall. After ordering a meal, they returned brandishing a pistol, escaping with *ZAR 1,000*.
Bus Stop Ambush: Shortly after the first robbery, the gang targeted a woman waiting for transport, robbing her at gunpoint.
The "Gold Seller" Trap: On April 1, the gang masqueraded as gold dealers to lure a victim. During the robbery, they attempted to steal *ZAR 15,000*.
The gang’s luck ran out during their final heist when a victim fought back, successfully *disarming* one of the robbers during a scuffle. This resistance provided the lead police needed; Malvin Maranganya was apprehended shortly after and subsequently implicated the remaining three members of the syndicate.
The gang was linked to three confirmed armed robberies. While the court has secured justice through lengthy sentences, none of the stolen ZAR 17,760 or US$100 has been recovered.
