Authorities and public health experts have consistently warned against the abuse of prohibited BronCleer cough syrup. However, an even more alarming concern has emerged: reports that some criminal elements are allegedly repackaging counterfeit products and selling them as genuine BronCleer on the illicit market.
If these reports are accurate, the danger extends far beyond substance abuse. Counterfeit products may contain unknown chemicals or hazardous substances that are not intended for human consumption. Because these mixtures are prepared outside regulated pharmaceutical standards, users cannot determine what ingredients they contain or the concentration of those substances.
The potential consequences are severe. Consumption of counterfeit substances may result in poisoning, respiratory complications, kidney or liver damage, permanent disability, or even death. Unlike medicines dispensed through licensed pharmacies, illegally packaged products undergo no quality control or safety testing.
The illegal manufacture and distribution of counterfeit medicines is a serious criminal offence that endangers public health. Criminals involved in this trade are motivated by profit, with little regard for the lives of those who consume these dangerous substances.
Prevent
Avoid prohibited drugs and never buy medicines from street dealers, unlicensed vendors, or social media sellers. If the source of a medicine cannot be verified, do not use it.
Protect
Parents, teachers, guardians, churches, and community leaders should educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse and counterfeit medicines. Awareness remains one of the most effective tools in preventing addiction and avoiding tragic outcomes.
Prevail
Members of the public who have information about suspected illegal drug manufacturing, repackaging, or distribution should report it to the Zimbabwe Republic Police or other relevant law enforcement agencies. Community cooperation is essential in dismantling criminal networks and protecting lives.
Every decision matters. A counterfeit bottle may look genuine, but its contents could be deadly. Protect yourself, protect your family, and reject illegal drugs and unregulated medicines.
