GWANDA – The Gwanda Magistrates' Court has sentenced a 30-year-old Esigodini man to an effective five years' imprisonment for attempted murder after he took part in a vicious attack that left a man permanently disabled.
Thandazani Mpofu was convicted following a brutal assault that occurred on 8 November 2022 at Portbury Business Centre in Matabeleland South Province.
According to court proceedings, Mpofu, acting together with his accomplices, ambushed 36-year-old Vusani Nhliziyo as he walked home. The group launched a savage attack using axes, knobkerries and a hammer before Mpofu allegedly used a knife to sever the victim's left foot and repeatedly stabbed him.
Believing the victim had succumbed to his injuries, the attackers abandoned him in nearby bushes and fled from the scene.
Despite the severity of the assault, Nhliziyo survived. However, he sustained catastrophic injuries that ultimately resulted in the amputation of both lower legs, leaving him permanently disabled.
Following the trial, the Gwanda Magistrates' Court sentenced Mpofu to an effective five-year prison term.
His co-accused, Limukani Privilege Sibindi, was convicted in 2025 and also received an effective five-year sentence. Meanwhile, a third suspect, Anthen Ndlovu, remains at large, with authorities continuing efforts to locate and arrest him.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe reiterated its commitment to prosecuting perpetrators of violent crime and ensuring justice for victims. The authority emphasized that offenders who commit serious acts of violence will continue to face the full force of the law.
