CHINHOYI — The Chinhoyi Magistrates' Court has sentenced a 47-year-old Nyabira man to 17 years in prison following his conviction for sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl.
The individual, who worked as a local security guard, was neighbor to the Grade One learner.
According to the state's case, on June 8, 2026, the young victim visited the resident's house at Gwebi Wood Farm Compound in Nyabira.
Upon her entry, the individual locked the door and assaulted the eight-year-old girl. Following the incident, he handed the child biscuits and instructed her not to disclose what had transpired inside the house.
The situation came to light when the victim's mother spotted her daughter walking out of the premises.
The mother questioned the child, who initially stated she had only been sleeping under blankets inside the house. However, further interviewing by both parents gave the child the comfort to reveal what had occurred.
A report was subsequently lodged with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), initiating an investigation. The victim was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare for a medical examination. The resulting medical report provided the necessary evidence for the state's case, leading to the conviction at the Chinhoyi courts.
Following the sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) reiterated its stance on the protection of minors and community safety.
"The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe will continue to ensure that perpetrators of sexual abuse against children are prosecuted and held accountable for their heinous acts," the Authority stated.
The 17-year sentence highlights the legal protections in place for children within farm compounds and surrounding Nyabira communities.
