MUTARE — A 41-year-old man from Honde Valley has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of attempting to rape a 23-year-old fellow villager.
The man was sentenced by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court following an incident that occurred on 29 June 2026 at around 2300 hours.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the offender was returning from a bar when he went to the victim’s house. The woman heard noises outside and saw him attempting to force open a window.
She reportedly threw avocados through the window in an effort to scare him away, but the man allegedly refused to leave. He then forcibly pushed open the locked door, entered the house and dragged the victim to a nearby forest.
The court heard that the offender removed the victim’s clothes and tied them around her mouth before attempting to rape her.
The victim fought back and grabbed the offender’s genitals, causing him to stop. She then managed to free herself and screamed for help.
A fellow villager heard her cries and rushed to the scene. The offender attempted to flee upon seeing the villager but was apprehended at the scene.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the man’s arrest and conviction.
The NPAZ condemned all acts of sexual violence, describing such offences as a gross violation of human dignity, bodily integrity and the right to live free from abuse and fear.
