CRIME FOCUS PUBLIC SAFETY COLUMN
A member of the public has raised concerns about two individuals who are allegedly seen regularly visiting various business premises, including butcheries and kitchens, claiming to be carrying out operations to apprehend people suspected of committing offences.
According to the information received, the individuals allegedly take some people and put them into a vehicle before demanding money for their release. If the money is not paid, they allegedly threaten to take the person to a police station.
It is further alleged that, in some cases, they go near a police station and call an officer on duty to come and collect the person, after which they leave.
WHAT THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW
Crime Focus reminds members of the public that no individual should unlawfully take another person by force, threaten them, or demand money in exchange for not handing them over to the police.
If a person claims to be working with the police, members of the public should remain vigilant and ensure that the matter is being handled through lawful procedures.
However, members of the public are warned not to physically resist arrest or take the law into their own hands. Your safety must come first.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
If you witness or experience such conduct:
• Prioritise your safety and do not physically intervene.
• Take note of the time and location of the incident.
• If possible and safe to do so, record the vehicle registration number.
• Note the names, service numbers or other identifying details of people.
• Preserve any available evidence and identify witnesses.
• If money is demanded in exchange for releasing or not taking a person into custody, the matter should be reported through appropriate official channels.
DO NOT REMAIN SILENT ABOUT SUSPICIOUS CONDUCT
Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected unlawful conduct to the police or other appropriate authorities.
At the same time, people should avoid spreading unverified allegations. Such complaints must be properly investigated, and every person should be given an opportunity for the truth to be established through due process.
